Heidi Toft

From computer teacher to web developer.

I want to follow the path I have been encouraging all of my students to start.

Portfolio Concept

Currently I teach computers to kindergarten - eighth grade students. I am comfotable with HTML and CSS and have shared that knowledge with my students. I have worked on creating basic, static wbpages with my students using only HTML and a little CSS.

Project Goals

For the next 2.5 months I am on summer break and planing to dedicate 30 hours per week to learning these new skills. My goal is to be about 2/3 of the way through the course work before my summer break is over. I would like to be comfortable with frontend developement by Labor Day weekend.

Course Goals

I am changing careers from teaching computers to elementary school students to becoming a web developer. It is my goal to pick up small freelance jobs for friends/family as I work to secure an entry level job in web developemnt. I would like to continue to learn and advance my skills in an established or a start-up company learning from experienced developers until I feel comfortable working freelance.

About Me

Introduction

I am a computer teacher who is making a career change into web development. I have been teaching computers for 15 years both in a small Catholic school and a large public school. I love working wth computers and teaching students about everything they can do with them, but am ready for a change. I also foster dogs for a local rescue and while many have been adopted to great homes, I have also adopted a couple along the way.

My Skills

  • HTML
  • CSS
  • Bootstrap
  • Teach computer skills to students ages 5-14

My Story

I have been interested in creating websites since the late 90's and took my first course in HTML in the early 2000's. At that time I didn't know much about web design as a career and had just recieved my masters in elementary education, so I took the first teaching job I was offered. I became the school's librarian and computer teacher. I helped the schol create its first website, which was very basic, but that lead to a much more sophisticated website created by a parent volunteer with a background in design. I continued to be involved in the school's website as I made day-to-day changes and added and deleted information as necessry. I have added web design to my computer curriculum and teach very basic HTML and CSS to my middle school students. This has helped to increase my knowledge. However, I have enjoyed working with web design so much that I want to make it a career and help others create the website of their dreams.
